  1. I was born in Berkeley. Sadly as I grew up I realized my NATIVE AMERICAN ancestry seemed
ashamed of their Indianhood, didn’t want it broadcast or shared as a connectio of pride. I ask:
did they know that Indians in general were treated as second-class citizens, even a bounty
paid for every dead Indian, etc? Respectfully submitted, Claire J. Baker.

    • Hi Claire–that’s interesting that you have Native American ancestry–what tribe? Yes, people who hid it probably did know that Indians had been treated badly ever since the Europeans arrived (but probably not realizing the degree of genocide). I grew up taking pride in mine (Choctaw–and being aware of the Trail of Tears), but Hertha says her family was more like yours and she only learned of her Indigenous ancestry in her twenties. I hope you can watch the LFDMC meeting this Sunday on Zoom.
