City of Berkeley Land Acknowledgment Proposal

Berkeley City Council member Sophie Hahn has proposed an official Land Acknowledgment to be read and displayed at Council meetings and recommended for other City agencies. She invites people to “tune in to the beginning [6:00 pm] of tonight’s Council meeting to hear Ohlone Tribal Chair Corrina Gould speak in recognition of the 30th anniversary of Indigenous People’s Day [first established in Berkeley] and discuss the importance of this Land Acknowledgement.” The 31 pages of documentation for the agenda item provide a good overview of the Indigenous history of the Bay area and California in general and the indignities and injustices suffered by the native peoples under colonization and settlement.
