Sogorea Te’ to Buy a House

From the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust Facebook page, a week after announcing they needed to raise $750,000 for a house in East Oakland that “sits directly across the street from another house that is also being Rematriated to Sogorea Te’. Together, these two pieces of land will house Indigenous staff members and their families along with office space and the first Chochenyo Language Institute. They will also be the first two properties we have outright title to. This is a huge step forward in our work of Rematriation, taking this Lisjan land off the speculative market forever and providing long-term, affordable housing for our community.”:

One week ago, we put out a call to help us buy our first house. We had an unexpected opportunity with a 14 day timeline. We had to at least try. So we asked for your support.

The response has been immense. You stepped up. You organized. You pledged. You gave.

We are humbled and overwhelmed with the amazing outpouring from our allies and accomplices and neighbors and friends and collaborators. With hundreds of donations and pledges and promises, ranging from $2.00 to over $200,000, we are stunned to have reached our goal before the deadline.

We will be able to buy our first house.

We will be able to begin establishing permanent affordable places for urban indigneous people to live and thrive in the Bay Area.

Congratulations from the UUCB Honoring Indigenous People’s Group!
